The 55th National Film Awards, the country's oldest alongside the Filmfare Awards was announced for 2007 feature films last week. The official list has been a delightful surprise, with some who so long-deserved,and oft relegated to the sidelines getting their due recognition, the recognition of fresh blood that has given a new impetus to national cinema and also some came as a reaffirmation of their consistent cinematic excellence.

The Swarna Kamal for the top categories - Best Film (Kanchivaram),Best Direction(Adoor Gopalakrishnan),Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment(Chak De! India), Best Children's Film( Foto),between themselves share the marked diversity of the talent that we have available nationally.

The Rajat Kamal in the popular categories (this list is by no means complete),
including

Best Actor - Prakash Rai (Kanchivaram)
Best Actress - Umashree (Gulabi Talkies)
Best Cinematography - Shanker Raman (Frozen)
Best Screenplay - Feroz Abbas Khan (Gandhi,My Father)
Best Art Direction - Sabu Cyril (Kanchivaram)
Best Make-up Artist - Pattanam Rasheed (Paradesi)
Best Music Direction - Ouseppachan (Ore Kadal)
Best Lyrics - Prasoon Joshi (Taare Zameen Par)
Best Male Playback Singer - Shankar Mahadevan (Taare Zameen Par )
Best Female Playback Singer - Shreya Ghoshal (Jab We Met )
Best Editing - Ajith Kumar (Naalu Pennungal ) reinforces what has been mentioned already.

Though the National Awards never is a final statement on the commercial succesful enterprise that is indian Cinema (and by which most ignorantly mean Bollywood),there are some subtle yet strong messages that come through the entire awards.

Lets face it.That little sliver of land way down South called God's own country (and now termed Goons Own country owing to the recent spike in criminal factions in the State) seems to have taken the majority of the categories in technical excellence.

They have managed to win

7

amongst the

12

categories which is no small feat! Also, there is something that still puzzles me in terms of adjudging the National Best for the best feature film - isn't it a natural progression of sane thought that the director of the Best Picture should be the Best Director? How can you turn around and hand it over to someone else? The debate presumably should have been around since 1954,for all I know.

This little note would not be complete but for the mention of Prakash Rai who got his long overdue recognition as one of the finest actors in the land, and Priyadarshan, who had to trudge through 75 movies, the title of the highest paid Director in India, before this great honor came his way.

Considered to be the equivalent of the Academy Awards, owing to the scale and categories, let it be known that hope still floats, and shines on the Indian Silver Screen.
